Olov Franzén (born 1946 in Umeå)

Autumn Duo (1997)

The technic he applies is the one Henry James uses in turning the screw Skruvens vridning. Bit by bit the tension is intensified. A constantly repeated material is put under gradually increasing pressure. The violinists used their range of colors and dynamics optimally. For me this dark piece evoked far deeper personal associations of agony and depression than Allan Pettersson’s sonatas. Yet Pettersson’s music is much more tense. Franzén has presented one of his master pieces, I believe.
